22 years ago this week

Post by Sumorunner on Mon Jul 22, 2013 12:34 pm

July 26 1991, St Jude's aortic valve, at Albany, NY Medical Ctr.

And doing just fine, thank you. Within the past year, now aged 65, I ran a half marathon, swam a mile and did 500 pushups (10x50) in one session. Nuff said.

Excellent, Sumo! So pleased to hear that mech valve is working so well for you. Prior to my valve repair op, I was asked to choose between tissue and mech in the event repair wasn't possible (turned out to be academic, thankfully). I chose tissue, but I if I was facing the decision again I'd go with the mechanical. It's been 11+ years for me, but the surgery feels like recent history. I like your story better than the prospect of a worn out tissue valve, I think (but I have no experience with Coumadin therapy).

Keep ticking away!

Congratulations Jack!!

They should hire you to promote their valves. What better endorsement could there be?

Way to go Jack!!!!!

I'm a tissue valver myself and I selected that one because the possibility of hearing it all the time (I'm really thin) just freaked me out.....but another surgery didn't really scare me....go figure.

If this one goes early, I'm all over the mechanical.

So glad to hear that you're doing really well and even much better than a lot of people I know who don't have heart issues!

Many many more healthy years to you!

Good for you. Long time to be ticking. I'm a tissue person. First it was my choice, second they recommend them for older people...not sure why. I was 68 when I had my surgery.

But I can't hear it any more. Even in a quite room I have to really concentrate to hear it. The tick has become so integral to my body, the brain has learned to completely tune it out.

Good to hear - I'm counting on that if I ever go mechanical!
