Another Librarian Conference

Post by Rachel August on Mon Jul 01, 2013 11:28 am

Yes another one – this time in Chicago.

My husband and I walked over to the Lake Shore Trail both mornings that we were in Chicago so that I could run on the concrete path that parallels the shores of Lake Michigan. This type of running is so very different than I’m used to, let me just say that I’m not a city girl. There were so many people running on this path – and the traffic from the expressway which was just feet away from the path was super busy even on Sunday morning at 6:00am – this city just does not sleep!!!

What a contrast for me. I’m no stranger to Lake Michigan as I live only a half mile away from this big grand blue beauty, however, my typical runs are the exact opposite of what I experience this weekend in Chicago. The running paths I usually take near the lake shore are shaded, lined with huge trees and steep natural sand dunes. The noises I hear come from the wind, or the bugs on the ground and I often catch the occasional scent of flowers nearby. It is a true sanctuary.

Running is running, a love and passion of mine – it has taught me several things, this weekend was no different. The most dreadful thing about running in Chicago was not the crowed path, the lack of trees, or the deafening noises…. nope, it was the two homeless people huddled against each other just waking up from their concrete bed out in the open on Sunday morning as I and several other hundreds of people ran by.

Again as always, running has given me a profound perspective.

I would like where you normally run rather than any crowded place. That's one reason I avoid races with tens of thousands of runners. Give me the small hometown ones.

You would love my regular route along the Mohawk. Not just rural, downright wild in many places and the fauna is not afraid of people since hunting is not allowed inside town borders. Although it is allowed on the opposite river bank, the ducks & geese know which side is safe. You can run up to a flock of turkeys and just about have to kick them to get them out of your path. Deer by the herd, not just one or two. Traffic? Can't even hear it most of the time.

While not on a trail this morning, I had to run through a gaggle of about 50 Canadian geese. They definitely let me know I was the intruder. Part of the Buckeye Trail runs not too far from my home along Lake Erie. That's the last place I fell while running - thought I saw a swan in the lake and wasn't watching where I was putting my feet
