Grandma's Marathon

Post by echoguy on Sun Jun 23, 2013 10:15 pm

I had always wanted to run Grandma's Marathon. When Journey's Marathon plans fell through a month ago, I checked available flights, hotels and registration and it looked doable. So I signed up. It also gave me a little bit of time to recover more from the two marathons that we ran in April and fell short. This one I would be running solo as my training partner was in Alaska running.

Lots of things consipired against me in this race. I wanted to jog the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon as a training run because I really like that race. But, it really beat up my quads two weeks before the race. My flight from Twin Cites into Duluth was delayed two hours because of weather and the car rental person had gone home even though she told me she would not when I had called before take-off. That resulted in a three hour sleep the night before the race. Also, I am on the tail end of a summer cold and have been coughing up crap out of my lungs for 10 days.

But......when I got out of bed and realized that we would have nearly ideal running conditions...50 degrees, completely overcase and a 10 mph tailwind the whole way, I decided to give my original goal a try.

Result - 3:24:16 - my BQ time is 3:30 for my age, so I am hoping that will get me in next year even with the increased interest in the race. We'll see. It beats my best post op time by four minutes and I have a feeling that I will be trying to beat this one for a while. It was a fun day!!

Hey Brian,

Just saw this - Congratulations on the BQ!!! Very Happy

Wish I would have know you were doing it - I finished about an hour and 43 mins after you in 5:07:17
It was a great day!! We could have met up at the expo on Friday - If you ever decide to do
another race in MN, let me know ahead of time. Don

Thanks Brian - When I re-read your post it sounds like you got to Duluth really late - you must have had someone pick up your number for you since I don't think they have any race day pick up.

Don

Nope. I paid the extra $25 and they sent it to me! It is a nice option for those who can not make the expo. I was very impressed with everything about the race. I hope to be back one day.

Just saw this.....and ain't it the way..when events/life seemingly conspire against you...the results are fantastic.

Your result speaks volumes to a successfully implemented training program and more importantly your dedication to that program.

My hat is off to you.

(Yep and thats me painting a target on yer back).
