Bill and Tutt in the Pine Creek Gorge

Post by Dave Tuttle on Thu Jun 20, 2013 7:09 pm

Bill Cobit and I spent the last 3 days kayaking and biking in PA's Pine Creek Gorge and had a fantastic time. We've known each other since our Akron race in 2007 and have stayed in touch both on line and off ever since. We have a lot in common and decided to get together to enjoy some fun time in the mountains south of where I live. Bill is a pretty serious biker who thinks a 70 miler is an easy day so I knew I was in trouble from the get go... We arrived about 4:00 pm Monday and rode a scenic 19 mile out and back on the rail trail at the bottom of the canyon to limber up after the drive. Tuesday we kayaked 18 miles through the canyon in 5 hours and managed some class II rapids without either of us flipping or getting pinned so we were tired but pretty happy with ourselves... Wednesday we spent the day biking about 35 miles of remote mountain roads on the West rim of the canyon and again enjoyed a great day together. I'm tired, my butt hurts from riding, and I'm happy. I'm really glad we did this. I've always liked Bill and we got to know each other a lot better over the last few days. Check out the pictures I posted in my photo album.

Great trip, Dave.  I will get the pix from my phone tomorrow and forward them for addition to the gallery.

Diane and I spent a week in the Blue Ridge Mountains just prior to my trip with Bill so we have been playing a lot... Play time is over though, at least temporally.

Awesome! We will actually be in the Tioga area the last two weeks of August. I just have to find out some dog friendly areas, and teach my dogs to run along side the bikes.. may just use some of the trails to run on.

Hey Kevin, if you're going to be anywhere near Pine Creek, the 70 miles of rail trail, or the gorge, and need camping/lodging info, I'm very familiar with the area. It's an hour and a half south of me and I spend a lot of time down there fishing, biking, hiking, paddling, and running. The whole area is a hidden treasure that is very under utilized.

The Pine Creek area is beautiful. If you get farther east in Pa, let me know. I can show you some nice trails here.
