Rachel’s Progress - Maybe

Post by Rachel August on Tue Jun 11, 2013 3:13 pm

I think I’ve turned a corner!

As some of you already know it has been really tough for me to mentally get back into running after my surgery, which was almost two years ago.

Since last year I’ve been running around a 10MM (I ran more like a 8MM-8.5MM before surgery) Although I’m really not trying to run faster, in the past month I’ve noticed that I’ll hit a 9MM on occasion – usually in the middle of a run. In the past week, those times have been increasing – so much so that last week I hit a 8.47MM in the middle of a 4 mile run. These of course are not consistent, I still do mostly 10MM but for example today went like this:

Mile 1 – 11.04
Mile 2 – 9.12
Mile 3 – 10.03
Mile 4 – 9.05

Since talking to some of you again I am feeling more relaxed, I feel great while I’m running, and I’m not really thinking so hard about surgery - but of course the quicker times happen right after my cardiologist says “Rachel don’t run, and if you do run, please don’t compete.”

It’s always something….I have my next echo coming up on July 10, so I’ll keep you posted.

I found a cure for pacing doubts.
#1) stop wearing a watch
#2) run as good as you feel
#3) feel good about how you run

Nice going Rachel. I wish I could get close to a 12 minute mile again. I struggle to run 13:30 anymore but I still work at it. I did a track workout this morning 6 x 400 and 2x200. Mine times were acceptable for me now but I used to do them almost two times faster. You're doing great, it takes time to adjust. My valve replacement was 6 1/2 years ago and it took me 5 1/2 to realize I wasn't going to get to where I was pre-surgery. I'm fortunate that I have a lot of fantastic running friends who have constantly tell me it's okay...It just took me a long time to realize it. Keep up what you're doing and accept where you are at any given time.

Thanks so much everyone for your comments – they mean so much to me!!!

I am surprised that my pace has picked up but I am more than thrilled that I’m running on a consistent basis again regardless of pace because I am finally starting to enjoy myself!

Thanks Kodi! - I don't think we'll be running a whole lot in the heart chase (mostly because my husband is on my team)

lol!

That's great news Rachel!! I think it's a slow process getting comfortable with our new realities and finding our new potential. It looks like you're on your way...
