2013 Race and Gathering Decided!

Post by Admin on Tue Apr 02, 2013 6:22 pm

We’ve selected the location for our 2013 H.E.A.R.T. race and get together. This year’s event is the Empire State Marathon in Syracuse, New York on October 20th. This race offers a full marathon and also includes a half marathon and a 4 member team relay event so there is something here for most of our regular participants.

From the feedback we received about last year's event in Baltimore and from our own discussions we felt we wanted to find a smaller race this year... With 27,000 runners, multiple start locations, and a horribly crowded finish area Baltimore was just too big and scattered to allow for the good group experience we're after. We feel the most important aspect of these events is the camaraderie and friendships that are forged and with a little over 2,500 participants, Syracuse sounds like a good fit.

Long time H.E.A.R.T. Board member Tom Price and fellow Syracuse native Richard Gardner will be working with Mike and I on this year's event so we have a good team in place to put it together and we're all excited about another memorable weekend with our "Heart Buddies".

This is a Sunday race so most everyone will be arriving Friday or Saturday. We'll plan on dining together whenever there's a group and will have our main meal  Saturday evening.

The weekend long event is open to all who have experienced heart events, heart surgeries, or other heart problems as well as their families and friends. Our mission is to bring fellow heart patient athletes of all ability levels together to celebrate our recovery from heart surgery and trade experiences about what it’s like to endure and recover both psychologically and physiologically from a life-threatening heart condition and also to promote the fact that a heart problem is not necessarily the end of an active athletic life… Our non profit corporation H.E.A.R.T. recruits participants from internet support websites, cardiac rehab programs, and hospitals throughout the USA.

The next task will be to select our hotel based on a good group rate and ability to accommodate our group with facilities to socialize and dine throughout the weekend.

We will be providing more information as our plans firm up so stay tuned and start thinking about which event you want to sign up for… Typically we are able to enter 4 or 5 relay teams and several runners in the other events as well. Last year we had 40 attend our diner the night before the race and we continue to grow every year.
