Triple Bypass

Post by marym0428 on Fri May 20, 2016 1:17 pm

67 year old female with Type 2 diabetes for 40 years.   I am 5’2 and maintain 136 pounds.  Very active and exercise regularly.  In December I began getting chest pain after eating.  Doctor prescribed a heartburn medicine and a muscle relaxer.

Pain continued and in February prescribed stronger heartburn medicine.  No relief and then in March began having pain with minor exertion.  One night I had two hours of pain after walking about 40 feet.  Doctor said he doubted they would find anything but suggested I go to the hospital for testing.

EKG and echogram were perfect.  Cholesterol and Triglycerides were good.  Oxygen levels 98%.  They admitted me for observation.  The pain continued and they suspected gallbladder.  The gallbladder found stones, but they decided to do a stress test too.

The stress test showed blockage and I was scheduled for catherization.  That showed that I was born with extremely small arteries and that I had blockage.  The arteries are too small for a stent and I was scheduled for bypass surgery.

After my triple bypass, I was weak and in pain.  Not much chest pain, but back pain and terrible pain in legs where arteries had been removed.  I had massive swelling and was carrying 30 pounds of fluid.  I spent a week in the hospital and then was moved to a nursing home for rehab.  They treated the back pain with biofreeze and heat packs.  Therapy built my strength back up and I was back driving three weeks after surgery and completely off restrictions by six weeks.

Lucky they did the stress test marym! It could have turned out much differently...

It sounds like you're recovering well now. Keep it up!
