comeback kid

Post by Sumorunner on Sun May 15, 2016 5:53 pm

I'm beginning yet another comeback having spent the last 6-7 weeks in extreme pain. My arthritis blossomed into a major spinal problem, a condition impossible to even pronounce, spondylolisthesis. That's where vertebrae shift out of alignment and pinch the nerves. A few weeks ago the pain went to 11 and I had to use a walker just to get around the house. I continued to use a cane until about a week ago. But now with rest and a couple weeks of PT, the pain has subsided to almost zero and I can get back to doing normal things again. The extraordinary will come along later.

Along with the stretches prescribed by the PT, I've been doing a recumbent exercise bike 10 minutes. Got a tiny bit carried away one day and pushed the HR to 155 doing 95 RPM on an "incline". MaxHR for my age is supposed to be 152, but I can probably push it to 160. So I got the road bike out and rode a bit in the Mohawk River bike path, even tried doing a few pushups this morning and still felt no pain. Best of all I got back to the pool and swam 3 days this week, first time was only 100 yds to see how it felt, then 500 yds the next day, and 600 yds today.

I may never be able to run again with this condition. Three different doctors told me to let it go, so I think I may need another opinion. At the very least, I'll wait 3 mos. before trying anything more than a walk.

Comebacks and re invention are always good Jack! Sorry for the problems and back pain is one of the worst IMO but I love your attitude!

Good luck and get that 4th opinion... 3 out of 4 Docs will always say you'll never run again.
