excited - Entry for Global Heroes 2016 soon!

Post by haggis basher on Sun Feb 28, 2016 6:15 pm

Hi All.
I have been a wee bit lax on this forum lately, but always think about my 'Cardiac' pals. Had a bad dose of 'Shingles', but recovering. Quite excited about Heroes, as I will only have 'one' chance (age)
Does anyone know when you get told whither you got picked or not, as we have the World Masters Games in Perth, West Australia, over the same period, and they have a very strict closing date.
I live very near an ex-Global Hero (Warren Williams)(Sydney) - I think a few of you will know him. I should be running against him soon in some fun runs!
I hope everyone is keeping well.
See Yaas
Brian Razz

Good luck with your Global Heroes application Brian, I hope you get picked!!

I think they usually notify those who are selected in mid June.

Applications are now open for the Global Heroes.
Go for it if you qualify.

I'm out.
Got some X-rays last week and the arthritis in my vertebrae is too far advanced, so I'll have to give up running. The Dr told me instead to get into cycling and competitive swimming in a big way. Well, he didn't actually use those particular words, but that's sort of what I heard.

Sorry to hear about the arthritis, was running your favourite sport? When I get injured, I normally turn to the gym, as being Scottish there was never too much chance to go swimming. (too cold) I have sent my application in for the Global hero, I hope the organizers don't have a heart attack seeing my age (76 then).(LOL) I believe that if you look after your mind/body/eat well; there is no reason that you can't exercise until...

I think the voice of reason speaks to swimming when the skeleton no longer tolerates running. Something tells me this is a loss though. Mr. Haggis basher seems to have the right perspective.
I will apply again though not getting overly optimistic. It seems they only choose one AMI/Stent patient per year.

Hi jerseyguy.Yes, get your application in! Tell them how a great person you are, and what they would miss if they didn't pick you. I would recommend anyone with a device to apply. It is in the 'hands of the Gods' if one is picked - but you have to be in it to win it!
Good Luck
Brian

Yeah, I guess. 43 years, 38,000 miles, 475 races. I may in future be able to do the occasional 5K at a near walking pace, but 10 miles is out of the question.

That's a tough diagnosis Jack... Sorry to hear. Sounds like you have a good alternate plan though. Getting older really is a pain. I'm struggling with a funky knee but can still run for now... Thinking about starting a Geezer Running group for just for us over 50 runners.

Sorry to hear about that Jack. It's just a matter of time before I face the same issues (and I'm a terrible swimmer). Biking is fun but i tried doing it through one winter and it becomes less fun when the wind chill is in the teens. I guess we all need to make the best of what we can do.

Still waiting to hear from Medtronics about Global Heroes! Don't think that I have been selected, as one of the English guys got informed last Friday that he was selected! Not too worried, as I have a 'massive' mountain race (in Tasmania,Australia) over nearly 4000ft (all Uphill) in November. I will be race-walking it, as you could have the four seasons weather in 3-4 hours...

Fingers still crossed for you to get chosen for Global Heroes Brian!

Good luck in Tasmania! That sounds brutal...

Thanks for kind words Dave. Last time I did the Mt Wellington run in Tasmania, it was sunny 23 degrees at start - snowing half way up, and 100km winds in face the last 2km! My lean then was like one of those alpine skiers!

Hi All
Got accepted as 'RESERVE" for Global Heroes Team last week! It was a great honour, but I kindly turned them down! I live my day 'A day at a time', and with all that doubt etc... Someone else might now have a chance of a 'magic' experience. bounce

Sorry you won't be in this one Brian but I think it is great you were chosen, even if it was as an alternate... Maybe next year!
