Bewick PA 10K

Post by twal on Sun Feb 28, 2016 9:47 am

I ran the Run for the Cookies 10K in Berwick Pa this weekend. The awards are cookies.

I did it in 55:16 (8:50/mi). I was 172 out of 330-360 runners depending on who you ask. I was 6th out of 12 in my age group (61-65) but I was beaten by every one of my rivals. I wasn't even the fastest Cardiac Athlete. John Jones beat me and that was with him stopping to help a runner who had fallen and was hurt. (He's not only a better runner than me but a better person.)

The first and last miles were flat and there was a 200 ft climb in mile 3. You can tell that by my splits.

1 - 8:27
2 - 8:45
3 - 9:43
4 - 8:31
5 - 8:49
6 - 8:53
last stretch 8:21 pace

I just could not recover after that hill in mile 3 in spite of some downhill.

It's now 6 weeks past my ablation surgery . I read that you can have some "loss of exercise tolerance" after ablation but you should recover. I hope I can and this isn't a plateau.

I've run this race a bunch of times and this gave me a chance to look back at my negative progress.

Year Age Time Pace
1991 40 39:37 (6:22)
2001 50 42:46 (6:52)
Mitral valve repair later that year.
2004 53 46:22 (7:28)
2011 60 51:50 (8:20)
2016 65 55:16 (8:53)

I know I'm supposed to be slowing down with age but since my valve surgery I seem to be slowing down at an accelerated pace compared to others in my cohort group. Each year I'm getting beat by more and more people I always used to beat. I'm not sure if it's my circulatory, muscular or nervous system that's going to hell but the numbers don't look good. At this rate, in a couple of years I'll only be able to walk.

I hope with time you bounce back too Tom... But if you don't, you'll still be way faster than me!
