15th Anniversary

Post by mikenall on Mon Jul 13, 2015 10:17 pm

15 years ago tomorrow, July 14, 2000, I had a heart attack. It was exactly 8 days after the doctors told me "there is absolutely nothing wrong with your heart".

For the next 3 years the Dr. said "absolutely no running". The medical profession was as wrong in their diagnosis as they were in regards to the "cure".

Since that time, I have personally seen a drastic change in exercise recommendations for heart patients. Many of the people in this group, whether they realize it or not, have helped influence those changes.

Since October 2003 I have run well over 100 races and since 2012, with a break in 2013 for a pacemaker implant, I have raced in 8 triathlons. Along the way I have met some of the best people anyone could ever hope to meet. Here's to another 15 years of racing and many more great people.

Congrats on 15 years of a full life! Imagine the tragic lost opportunity if you had followed conventional "wisdom." Totally agree with your point about meeting people and having memorable experiences.

Congrats also on the Senior Games -- what an accomplishment as well as testimony to the possibilities of life after cardiac events.

Congratulations for all you've accomplished since your heart attack Mike! Not only have you fought through some serious heart issues and come out on top, you've also made the most of those 15 years by constantly reaching out and helping other heart patients discover what they are capable of. You are a good friend and an inspiration to all... I am so glad our paths took us both to that gathering in Akron back in 2007... Without your involvement and efforts HEART would never have happened!

Hey Mike,  I think you rank among those "great people" you are talking about.  It will be two years for me in October.  I truly had no idea there were people like you until I met everyone last fall.  I would be happy to accomplish half of what you have.  Congratulations and best wishes for the next 15 years.
