Shepherdstown Visit Last Week

Post by Dave Tuttle on Mon Jun 08, 2015 4:31 pm

Diane and I were in Shepherdstown, WV last week checking out the area and the Clarion hotel and conference center where our group is staying for this October's 10th annual HEART gathering. I knew from my research that the race and the town were pretty special and would be a great place for our gathering but everything we saw greatly exceeded our expectations... Shepherdstown is a small college town and the oldest town in West Virginia. The downtown business district where the 5K, 10K, and Half Mary start is only about 5 blocks but it is filled with beautiful old buildings, eclectic shops, and many nice restaurants. It's a really nice place to spend a day or two and everything is an easy half mile walk from the Clarion. Shepherdstown is nestled between four national parks two of which focus on the civil war but all encompass much more than the war alone. The history of the region, the people, the civil rights movement, industry, and architecture are all carefully preserved and explored here. You may want to plan on a few extra days to enjoy everything this area offers. It's such a nice place that I am certain it will be remembered as one of best locations we've ever had our gathering in.

I have not been to Shepherdstown before, but we have been to the surrounding area at least three previous times. Full of history and interesting spots. I'm really looking forward to visiting. We will be spending some extra time there!!

I don't know, it is exactly 21 miles from my daughter's house, but because of the Appalachian Mountains, I will have to drive almost 35 miles to get there.  I guess seeing you folks would be worth it, and since my newest granddaughter was born two days ago, I will be in the area in a few days to introduce myself.  If I stay out of trouble, and the authorities ignore my presence, I may be allowed to return in October.

You had better behave yourself - I'm expecting to see you...but then again isn't there that whole passport thing you need in order to get out of Ohio....you know to travel to the US....

Glad you scoped out the venue Dave. We visited Antietam Battlefield and surrounding area years ago. Looking forward to this trip.
