Ride of Silence – May 15

Post by Rachel August on Wed May 08, 2013 11:54 am

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to send out a quick message about the Ride of Silence event coming up next week Wednesday May 15.

As you may or may not know, my younger brother Brett Netke was killed by a motorist while he was cycling on his normal training ride in Wisconsin on Father’s Day 2010.

He was 42 years old and left behind a wife and three small children (all under the age of eight).

The Ride of Silence is a free event held in communities everywhere to promote awareness of cyclists rights to the road, and to honor those who have been injured or killed while cycling.

If you don’t already participate in your local community ride, I hope that you consider it. I’ve included a link to the national ROS website and also a two short videos – one that I did with a law firm in Wisconsin about this event and the other an interview after the Wisconsin ROS 2011 (two months before my OHS)

Those are very touching videos Rachel and such a sad tragedy... I admire you for enduring more pain in order to raise awareness and hopefully save lives.

Rachel, this broke my heart watching the videos.
But what a great thing you and the others are doing. This has grown so much, and hopefully made many aware of the vulnerability of a cyclist.

I am so sorry for what you and your family had to go thru.
But, bless you for trying to make sure that other families do not have to get such devastating news.

Just wanted to thank you Bill and KC for your notes as well.

I'm headed out to the ride in a few minutes and was interviewed by our local reporter here in town.

That's strange that they don't have a ride in Richmond.... well thanks for your thoughts anyway.
