Mackinaw Trip

Post by RoadKillBill on Thu Jun 04, 2015 5:22 am

There was some nice weather in northern MI so we decided to take a bike ride we'd been thinking about for a couple of years.  We abandoned the car about 65 miles south of the Mackinac Straits and rode to the bridge on a rail trail.  Cold mornings but warm afternoons and very nice scenery.  Since hotels in Mackinaw City are plentiful and it's not quite tourist season yet, we got a deal on a lake view room.  Even enjoyed a breakfast waffle without a brawl (it's a thing in Michigan: http://www.mlive.com/news/muskegon/index.ssf/2015/05/waffle-maker_dispute_results_i.html ).

Had another great but unambitious ride along the St Clair River (between Lake St Clair and Lake Huron). "Junk miles" we used to call them when we had our triathlon lifestyle disorder. But now that we're in recovery, these trips are quite pleasurable.

You're having way too much fun Bill!!

Here's to Junk Miles cheers

They may not get you through an Iron Man or Ultra but they are heart healthy miles!

Please do post some hiking photos Brian... Most of us enjoy hiking too and are always looking for new places to go!

I know that ride well Bill. We always took our bikes up there when we went up there on our boat, and that would be my early morning workout. Remind me sometime to tell you about meeting up with the FBI up there. I found something very interesting on a bike ride near St. Clair.

Just signed up for my first triathlon since 2012 (July 11). It's a short one, so it shouldn't kill me. I've been riding my bike a lot and swimming, but I'd better get to work on my running pale

Sprint Triathlon

Post by RoadKillBill on Sat Jul 11, 2015 1:38 pm

This morning I ran my first triathlon in 3 years.  It was a sprint distance (0.5/11/3).  I'm getting older and I haven't done much fast-paced riding this year, so I didn't know what my target time should be.  I decided that 1:30 or less would constitute success.  I came in at 1:25 so I was pleased.

The race was on Lake St. Clair in a small town that not only tolerates but celebrates the fish fly (town mascot, apparently).  The carcasses pop like bubble wrap under your bare feet as you walk down to the swim start Smile.  The bike course was largely free of the little critters, which was good, since the wings can act like synthetic ice under your bike tires.

Conditions were perhaps the best I've ever enjoyed -- no wind, clear, 70 degrees with low humidity.

All-in-all, a very nice morning.  I might need to do another one of these before the summer is out.

Great to see you back out doing a tri!
And nice to beat your target time.

Those bugs are gross. Really gross. Shocked

Absolutely loved the photos, Big Guy! Well, with the exception of the banking kiosk. How can one even breathe with that many critters flying about? Is that what we used to call Canadian Soldiers? I remember road trips up to Canada with my dad sixty years ago. The windshield was covered with them. Never went that far north since!!!

Congrat's on the time though. I can't believe you haven't done a tri in three years!!! Was that last one the Ironman in Lake Placid that Dave and I watched?
