Crazy start to 2015

Post by Bean Counter on Sun Mar 15, 2015 3:31 pm

Hello Everyone-

I have been MIA for a while as I have been trying to get caught up on life. 2015 started out great as I started a new job after having been unemployed for almost 8 months. Training for the Illinois Marathon (late April) was going great and I was consistent with my training (was already up to 18 milers by the end of January. The biggest challenge was trying to consistently run outside with the nasty winter we had here in midwest.

On the morning of Feb 4th, I woke up in the emergency room of the local hospital. Apparently around 4:00 AM my wife woke up and I was having a seizure. She is a Nurse Practitioner that has experience is both an ER and ICU environment. She immediately jumped into medical mode and called 911. She noticed I was not breathing, so she checked for a pulse and I had none and I was turning blue. She immediately pulled me off the bed and gave me CPR and I came around. I spent a week in the hospital so they could monitor me and try and figure out what the root cause was. Unfortunately they could not find any. They are also unsure if the cardiac arrest came first or the seizure. I left the hospital on with a prescription for anti-seizure medication and also had an ICD implanted.

So far things have been well. I am on an exercise restriction until I am fully healed from the ICD implanted...so another 1.5 weeks of no running. I have been riding the recumbent bike at the gym to try and keep some of my aerobic fitness. Neither the neurologist or the cardiologist have any concern about me resuming normal activity levels. So, instead of running the full marathon next month (illinois Marathon), I will run the half. I already have the hotel reservation. :-) It wont be pretty, so I am going to treat it as a celebration of life and letting my body know that whatever you throw at me, you can keep this cardiac athlete (and also the Marine in me) down.

It takes guts to keep running after a scare like that. Good luck for your half marathon and please keep us posted on how you're doing.

Just reading that story scared me!

You definitely need to celebrate life!
I could think of better ways to do than running a half mary....but each to their own. Smile

Wishing you the best on a full and speedy recovery!!!

OMG that is scary stuff! So glad to hear you got through that episode without any apparent damage, but it must be nerve wracking. Best of luck on the upcoming half. Be careful!
