Re: Upcoming schedule

Post by Marc Thayer on Fri May 23, 2014 9:08 pm

It's back to the scene of the crime...Burlington VT.. this go around a two person relay.

This'll make my third year in attendance. For those of you with razor sharp math skills you'd think I ran in this event 6 weeks after my OHS. Not so...my kindly sister took up the reins and organized a 5 person relay team and I jogged a few steps with all the participants...last year went the full to marginal results (at least in my opinion) and given my lack of meaningful training..the half is about all I can do. As we all would like to forget..the past winter was a bear to train thru..and all I could seem to do was recover from one nagging injury to another.
So Sunday I'll be doing the second leg...a nice 10 AM start..giving me plenty of time to quaff my usual three tankards of hi test (unlike Cincinatti) and go for a stroll with 5K of my new bestest running friends along the shores of Lake Champlain.

Have a great time at the relay, Marc!

You have come a long way since your surgery, and taking those first few steps of many.

Looking forward to the race results!

Re: Upcoming schedule

Post by Marc Thayer on Mon May 26, 2014 12:10 pm

It was a marvelous day for a spin around Burlington's blocks. The skies remained clear..and the fog burned off early.
I finally met my relay partner...he was already in the corral with the 9 minute pace crowd....I was filling in for his original partner.
It was good to know who I should be looking for in about 2 hours at the exchange point rather than just a bib number.

True to his word he came in at just a mite over two hours....looking rather peaked I might add...after the long winter and noticeably cool spring the air temp of 60's must have felt absolutely tropical.

Off and running...immediately into crowded conditions along a paved bike path...lotsa dodgem to be played before finally breaking out to the main drag..with a rather longish uphill stretch at 2 miles...then it was a matter of taking what the course would offer..some ups and downs but really just about flat.

Crowds were, as usual, fantastic...this is an event that people really get excited about...music..cowbells sprinklers..drums..it's all there.

I homed in on 8's for my splits and pretty much carried that thru for the first 10. The wheels came off somewhat for 11 and 12...a touch of vertigo in there as well...but that wasn't unexpected. I just haven't been able to train the way I would have liked...distance wise. Finished strong with the last mile and a quarter at 8 even and a total of 1:47.

Medical staff wanted me to head for the tent...but I knew I wasn't that tapped out...nuthin' a bottle of water and gnosh couldn't fix...

Essentially a decent start to the season given all the restrictions that have been diverting me this year.

A nice little run.

There's one restaurant that people can reserve a table for the morning and watch the runners go by on the various loops. My 'support team' is considering that option for next year. I'll probably the DD for the return home. (They do love their craft beer and after a four hour session of deep elbow curls driving is best left to others).

Great run Marc - especially given the poor training conditions this winter!

Nice race Marc!

The 2006 Burlington team relay was the first race this group got together for... Last time I checked you had to win a lottery to get a team in, is that still the case?

Yes Dave still on the lottery system. I back doored the registration by being a replacement runner. Teams register, get in on the lottery...and then something happens and a team member can't go...there is a pool of replacements. It's pretty well organized.

Re: Upcoming schedule

Post by Marc Thayer on Sat Jun 28, 2014 8:32 pm

Back in the US after a brief sojourn to the land of Fire and Ice. Silver tongued devil that I am I had convinced the Bishops that it would be very cool (literally and figuratively) to make this trip as there was a half marathon on the 23rd.
All facets of the trip went pretty much as expected. There were some perceptual problems when it came to currency conversions. Somebody in the Thayer travel party has a really nice coat (thank goodness there is the tax rebate thing going on). Iceland can be very expensive.

As to the stated purpose of the trip..Started at 9:20 PM, pretty much early evening light conditions..mostly cloudy a goodly breeze from the north, temps just under 60.
Seemingly perfect conditions. Rachael and I opted for the back of the pack, neither one of us 'feeling' it, nor expecting to do much in the time dept.

Being totally unfamiliar with the course geography I started conservatively..the pre race rumour mill reporting a long hill somewhere out there and 13 is about my limit these days. Having run Burlington three weeks prior I wanted to avoid bonking at ten.

There wasn't a huge number of halfers (they also run a 10K and a 5K for this event), just over 300 or so. I had been concerned that there'd be a lot of congestion on the course as it is mostly run on paved bike/walk trails. Obviously not an issue with the low volume of participants.

I had reviewed the previous years AG winning time and I hoped to thoroughly trash that..and I did..but came in 4th in the 60-69 division..my first foray in that AG.
I wore my HEART shirt and one of the runners I was pacing with was from Ohio, there was some banter about Cleveland during and post race.

My time was 1:48 and change..gun/chip time not much different, but I had horrible splits, pretty much all over the spectrum, 7:15 to 9:05. Hills, wind and fitness being contributors to that issue.

They had three water stops on the course, but the finish line didn't offer anything more. I was totally bagged at the end and had to get my gel paks going immediately upon finishing. I understand oranges and banannas are expensive but a little creativity please race director. Didn't see any EMT types either. The lesson there is know how to assess the event advert hyperbole and ask questions before hand.

Haven't targeted the next island race, but I'm sure a trip to the UK is in there somewhere. Hey Russ got any suggestions?

Sounds like a fantastic adventure Marc... Nice race and what a neat place to travel to for a race.

Looking forward to hearing how Rachel's race went too... It's especially cool that you both went for the race.

Hey Marc - SO GLAD you convinced us to go to Iceland!!!

FUN event and you did VERY well - especially since that wind in the first half of the event was a killer!

Oh - and I didn't end up with "a very nice coat" maybe I should have hung around you and your wife more.....I guess I need lessons on how to make stuff like that happen more often! It was SO hard to pay for stuff - "that will be $2,000.00 Krona for your coffee and roll" Shocked

Toying with Saint John NB half in August..and a chance to see the Bay of Fundy in action. Might even get a solid month of training in before hand..what a novel concept!

Hi Marc, if it is bridges you want, think about Pittsburgh Marathon next May 1-3. Dave and I are targeting the half. I posted the link in the Harrisburg post. Could be a good HEART event to.

Saint John sounds like a great race Marc and the Bay of Fundy would be a nice reason to go too... We toured NS and Cape Breton Island a few years ago but skipped the bay. Its on the list for next time for sure.

Not really sure anymore that you need to train "Mr. Speedy regardless of how much you actually trained beforehand"  Cool
