I just got home from the Univ. Penn Hospital. The ablation appears to have been a success although time will tell. I'm still able to fog a mirror, so that's a good sign.

They only did the simpler right-side ablation because it appears that my arrythmias were really flutter and not afib.

Dr. Callans at UPenn and the staff there were really great. I'm recommend it for anyone who needs this surgery.

I'm supposed to take a week off to recover. It looks as if I'll be dropping off the leaderboards but I'll be back.

And you'll continue to need to put up with my postings.

I'm very glad it went well Tom!!

You made it through the ablation in good shape but now comes the real test and I'm not so sure you'll survive the forced week off!

lol!

We'll see you on the Leaderboards again soon!

Dave's correct, the most difficult part is keeping you inactive for a whole week.  Not to worry, you'll be back on those 'boards and better than ever.

You're both right. I'm ready to lace 'em up right now.

First run after surgery. Only two miles but you're got to start somewhere. Felt fine.

Re: Ablation or not?

Post by twal on Sat Feb 06, 2016 7:35 pm

It was a beautiful day today (for February) at 38F, windy but no snow cover.

So I jumped into a 5K race and did 26:44 (8:37) per mile, 32 out of 58 (2 out of 3 in 65-69 age group). I was a little disappointed in that I had run 25:22 a few weeks ago (before ablation). This was a much hillier course and partly on trails.

Adding to the disappointment was that I usually beat the guy who won my age group. (We actually went to elementary school together.)

Considering that this was just 3 1/2 weeks since catheter ablation, I'm just calling it a benchmark and will move on from here.

Did you have clearance to do this or were you being a rebel rouser?  Never be disappointed in what you accomplish, you are doing a whole lot better than most folks after ablation this soon and as you said, it's a hillier course.   Wink Glad you are healing just fine and that this race will be a benchmark for you.  Smile

The doctor said I could return to normal activity after a week but "normal" activity for a runner includes 5 K races. that's probably not what he meant.

The Doc's first mistake was using the word normal while talking to you Tom lol!

Glad to see you're running races again... I'm betting you get your speed back soon!
