Newport would be great for me. There would be inexpensive hotels in neighboring Middletown.

We'll put together a list of the possible locations and put up a poll here on the forum for everyone to vote for the races they would be able to attend. We'll plan on it for the first of the year and then try to select a location by the end of January.

If anyone else knows of good race that could work for the group post it here

This is the hospitality company in Middletown that I would recommend using if the Newport  race is selected. There are three properties within walking distance of the race start/finish. There are plenty of restaurents local..walking distance again..Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner  The Beach club does a lot of banquets.  It is popular with weddings so I'll check dates.

The hotels are pretty much two star..nuthin' fancy.

Marathon is part of half marathon series.

And the race doesn't need to be a marathon. Not many of our folks do a full marathon at our get together. There should be a choice of distances.

Based on a cursory review..the Schroon Lake option has a plenitude of options for running...not so sure about accommodations tho...apparently a bunch of hiking and canoeing and stuff to keep certain old codgers ADD placated (that Columbus crew can be so difficult )

Rodney Dangerfield should be notified of this

Post by Gary E on Sun Dec 28, 2014 12:41 pm

HEY!!! As seldom as I get a chance to chime in here, I think I should be treated with more respect. You folks just don't realize how difficult it is for an elderly gentleman, who is trying to watch his weight, being forced to eat a tub of cheese balls, spend days driving a bunch of sweaty runners all around the state of Kentucky, or watching from the sidelines at multiple events just because he happens to be injured at that particular time, to continue to support this organization.

We're still researching the previously suggested races and looking for more possible locations too. We should have a short list soon but definitely want to hear from you if you know of a race that might be a good fit for our 2015 gathering... A race that includes a Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K would be ideal. Sunday races seem best suited for travel. Hotels within walking distance of the start/finish are a big plus.

Are there any more race ideas out there?

I like the idea of a new race that HEART has not run before, I also liked the Baltimore Running Festival, it has all the hills that Marc will like.  Wink  They have five distances.

One of these years we should create our own, a totally new event by, for and of heart survivors.

Got more, not less, than I bargained for

Post by Gary E on Sun Jan 18, 2015 12:06 pm

When I saw Brian's response to Rachel's posting, I immediately went to that website. Naturally, being the nature-lover that I am, I clicked on the Adam & Eve run. I wanted to see if it was "clothing optional" as always depicted in their garden scene  Very Happy . It turns out, there really is an "option" regarding clothing...but not what I was thinking. Check this out from their website:

The Adam and Eve Half Marathon is Charlottesville's first SOCIAL RUN.  [Whether you are single or in a relationship, you can decide on a RED shirt (if you are in a relationship), a GREEN shirt (if you are single and ready to mingle) or a YELLOW shirt (if it's complicated).  RED means STOP!  GREEN means GO!  YELLOW means CAUTION! As Charlottesville’s first social run, the Adam and Eve Half Marathon and 8K and will be the perfect place to meet new friends, to change your status from “single” to “in a relationship” and to share the love of running in the process.

I was thinking that Virginia would be a great place for a meet-up ….. there’s one in April (too early for this year)
http://www.charlottesvillemarathon.com/

and one in October (10K and half)
https://www.badtothebone.biz/index.php/races/fall-classic-half-10k

and one in November (8K – half and full)

I love your new avitar Louise. Hope that sling comes off soon!

Great suggestions coming in... I sure would like to go someplace exotic someday too but today my wallet is telling me otherwise... Maybe we could find a rich sponsor?

Sumo, I think you've had a vision! Organizing our own HEART race could be the way to go... How cool would that be?

Rachel, Charlottesville and Richmond both look good. Any idea how big they are?

I have one more day of freedom before I get my sling. Smile  Finally figured out how to flip Teddy so that it's his right arm...OCD going on here.  Very Happy

I like Rachel's suggestion for October (10K and half).  I could probably get in some running for the 10K.  I will be able to start running at 8 - 12 weeks post op, depending on my progress.

And, for those looking for extracurricular activities, Charlottesville had lots of good wineries!  (Trump, Dave Matthews among others)

This looks like a great race and location so I just did a quick check of available hotels... The only hotel within walking distance is booked nearly full and doesn't have enough rooms that weekend. The sales Manager told me that the other more distant hotels would be at least $200.00 that weekend too. It's a very busy time of year for them. Crying or Very sad

We normally get a group rate of around $120.00 so what do you all think about 200?

Neutral  That's a bit much to me.  This is for Charlottesville?  Virginia can be expensive.

$200.00 - too high.....it would be just like me to unintentionally pick expensive places!!!

We are narrowing it down to several very nice races that have everything the group needs including reasonable prices and other things to do while you're there. We should have a poll up here on the forum soon to get your votes. We're currently working on a few choices on the east coast, the south, and northern mid west... Stay tuned.
