2015 HEART Annual Gathering... Our 10th Year!!

Post by Dave Tuttle on Thu Dec 11, 2014 4:44 pm

Rachel, Mike, and I have been trying to find hotel accommodations in Grand Rapids with the hope that the Grand Rapids Marathon and Relay could be our 2015 annual gathering. We really wanted to bring the group here because it's such a great town and race but unfortunately we ran into the same problems as last year when we tried. All the close by hotels are way overpriced and overbooked already. The best group rate we could find was $169.00 and they didn't even have enough rooms for us. Since we had to give up on Grand Rapids we started talking about other destination possibilities. We already know there aren't a lot of marathon relays out there to choose from and that limits where we can go to a great extent so we asked ourselves if we had to focus exclusively on a relay... We ended up deciding to broaden our search to include more race possibilities but still keep the fun group experience and family atmosphere our primary goal. We think we can find a nice race with 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon distances and have just as good of a time as we did with the relays, perhaps even more fun... Instead of everyone being strung out at the various transitions and all over the race course running alone this scenario would allow runners who run at similar paces to run together if they want to and those who want to race and place well would be able to burn up the race course too. We would eliminate all the problems of filling teams, finding subs, and getting runners to and from the transitions. Family and friends could now all be together at the start/finish instead of hauling their runners to and from the transitions so it might be nicer for them too.

We would like your feedback on this new approach and also any suggestions you may have for possible races. A location that has broad family appeal by offering other activities and points of interest is a plus as many like to make a long weekend of it with side trips to the local attractions... The majority of our members are east of the Mississippi so to insure a large turn out we should probably focus on that region for now.

I'll keep my eye out for one that meets my criteria

Sounds like you provided all the ammunition we need to find a race without relays. Now all we need is to find is one that has a nice downhill course which always has the wind at our back, great scenery, fabulous after and pre-event amenities, with inexpensive lodging and race entry. Oh, and I'll be sure and be there if it is also held in late spring or mid fall so that we don't have to deal with any heat or cold. But, the way my training is going, it may need to have a 5k distance. I'll keep my eye out for one that fits that description so that I don't miss another year.

Sorry Grand Rapids isn't working out.  It would have been nice to run on Rachel's  turf!  We don't really need a relay....I'm not sure Long Branch, NJ had one....and we all had a good time.

Have we ever considered Mt Desert Island?

It is on my wish list, so I plan to do it one day anyway. And it does have a relay.

The big problem with half marathons in recent years is that most of them have a cap and sell out very quickly. The ones that don't will have several thousand entrants. The half in little old Albany in the fall sells out in 1 or 2 days. The marathon sells out in hours. Someone may need to contact the race director early on setting us up as a charity team because most do keep a large number of slots open to the charities like Leukemia, Diabetes, Stroke, Heart, etc.

Schroon Lake, way up in the Adirondacks, but you'd have to fly into Albany and drive a couple hours.

We had runners from our club do both the Richmond Full and Richmond Half this November and they both raved about it. They have a full, half and 8k all on the same day. I think the race size and city size would fit our group nicely. It is on my wish list. http://www.richmondmarathon.com/

I'm flexible as long as it's within a one day's drive and I don't have to run a full marathon.

I asked my running club for suggestions, they keep coming up with more. Here's another interesting locale. Gettysburg PA

just throwing out some options

Post by Gary E on Sat Dec 13, 2014 10:32 am

There's been a slew of suggestions on race sites, but I think several, including my current residence, may actually be too large to accommodate our involvement. Columbus had over 15,000 runners last year and with all the friends and relatives vying for viewing space at the finish line, not to mention lodging and transportation issues that whole weekend, I think we should drop it from consideration.

In fact, if there are any really analytical members on our selection committee, we should probably look into the ratio of hotel rooms to contestants. Also, do we have to convene at a site that has a marathon? I know I've always had more fun at multi-day relays than any one single event. Come to think of it, by February I may just want to head to some tropical beach for some quality "down time" spent with friends like you.

Wow! What a great selection of possible races... With this many choices the only problem we'll have picking a good race is having to choose which one!!

Keep the ideas coming!

Missquamicut RI is very nice. We've vacationed there a few times. Beautiful beaches, a couple bars, not much else. Oprah Winfrey had a house just down the road, in a rather up-scale seaside neighborhood. No large hotels, but they are very reasonable in the off season. We'd probably have to book into two or three different places, but they would be right next door to one another. My wife would want to come along for this one and then just sit on the beach all day and get mesmerized by the waves.

The Newport marathon has a half and 5K option. October 12 2015. Plenty of accommodations..but none particularly cheap tho there might be a deal or two. An incredible amount of things to do and see.

Well one thing then, they're all in the USA...!

I'd love to come over and join in - 2015 may be a problem since we're already coming over to the US in July/August and a repeat visit probably won't be possible, but I'd like to see dates and options anyway just in case. From my point of view, as long as there is a marathon option (or longer!) then it'd be worth the visit, running-wise (that's not discounting the huge value of meeting up with you guys!).
