Berwick 9 miles

Post by twal on Fri Nov 28, 2014 7:28 am

My thanksgiving Day race was the Berwick, Pa 9 miler. This was the 105th running of one of the oldest races in America and for me it was a case of rising from the ashes of my crash & burn at Harrisburg.

After my atrial flutter event at Harrisburg and the snow the day before the race, I wasn't sure I was going to race but my daughter who was visiting was running so I gave it a shot. She did 7:27 's for her race.

My time 79:13 (8:48/mi) was my slowest ever by almost 2 minutes and I was beaten by a couple of my rivals but I was happy just to make it through, considering that a few weeks earlier, I could only shuffle along. I was 614 out of 1315 overall and 20 out of 43 in the 60-64 age group.

This course has a brutal 600 ft. climb between miles 2 and 3.25 plus a few smaller hills. You can get an idea of the terrain by looking at my mile splits.

It was about 33F and the course was wet with melting snow. I couldn't feel my toes after the first mile. Fun

Nice run(s) by both you and your daughter on a tough course (and conditions).

Nine miles with a big-time climb early-on is fantastic. Glad to see you're not loosing a beat (so to speak). Oh, and thanks again for stopping by to say "hi" when we were up in the gorge earlier in the year.
