8K Turkey Trot

Post by Bean Counter on Thu Nov 27, 2014 10:59 pm

This morning I ran the Chicago/Lincoln Park 8K Turkey Trot. I am just coming off of a 9 day break from running due to a Fall cold I could not get rid of. In previous years, I used this race as a way to confirm my HR training zones (the poor man's method of determining your lactate threshold HR is to run the race all out and whatever your HR is the last 3 miles should be your lactate threshold HR...as long as you pace the race correctly). That was going to be my plan today when I first signed up (before I got sick). Having just come off of my unplanned break, I was not sure what to expect in this race. I figured my pace for the 15K (low 7:30s) I did a few weeks ago might be a reasonable goal. From the start, I went out pretty hard and stuck with a pretty solid group. I finished the race with an overall average pace of 7:12 a mile, which most splits were pretty close to that. Unfortunately my Garmin showed what was supposed to be the last .97 mile was actually 1.1 miles, so my recorded pace was 7:22. I normally don't like to be "that guy" complaining about a race being long because my Garmin is different, but each split was around 7:12 and then the last ".97" was 7:48 (1.1 mile @ 7:48 time comes out to about a 7:10 pace), so I am pretty confident in my Garmin.

Anyway, either time blew away my goal. To ensure I got in enough running today to justify the 2nd piece of pumpkin pie, I ran 3.5 miles to the race, then raced, and then ran back home for a total of 12 miles today.

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.

Not only did you have a great race time, but when you consider the three mile warm-up and same distance cool-down, I'm super-impressed. Hope we get to meet up someday...but not to race, that's for sure.

I love it that you came back so strong after your break!!! You're a fantastic runner and I also hope to meet-up with you someday (like Gary - not to run but to hang out)
