Hot Chocolate 15K

Post by Bean Counter on Sun Nov 09, 2014 3:10 pm

Today I ran the Hot Chocolate 15K race. For those not familiar with this race, it is primarily geared towards non-runners. By that I mean you pay $65 and the big selling points are the fleece you get and the snacks at end of the race. I signed up for it as we had some friends coming into town to run it, so we figured why not. Fortunately I was seeded at the front.

I shifted my focus away from lifting weights/ running to only running once September rolled around. I started doing tempo runs again in October and my weekly mileage has been averaging 50-55 miles per week. With that said, I gave my self a goal pace of 7:30-7:45 per mile.

This is probably the first race where I did not start out too fast. I actually held a pretty constant pace throughout the race and ended up with a time of 1:10:15; which translates to a 7:33 minute pace. I was happy with the race and it was good to get out there and see where my running fitness was at.

Up next is an 8K Turkey Trot and then December 1st kicks off official marathon training for the Illinois Marathon in April 2015.

I like to give credit where credit is due and would like to call out they they they did a phenomenal job with organizing this race. There were 45K runners (amongst both the 5K and 15K distances offered). Not once did I have to wait for a bathroom and the line for the chocolate (cup of hot chocolate, chocolate fondu with pretzels and rice krispy treats) at the end was non-existant. Gear check was simple. It was a pretty nice fleece as well, so I will hold onto this one.

Outstanding result. You should have been on our relay today in Harrisburg instead of me.

I'll be there next year - not to run with you of course - you're WAAAY too fast for me - but maybe for a visit!
