Man Finishes Marathon He Had Heart Attack at Last Year

From RW on line....

Man Finishes Marathon He Had Heart Attack at Last Year

By Scott Douglas. Published September 30, 2014 .

Kansas resident Jeff Blakeman ran the last 7 miles of Sunday's Quad Cities Marathon to complete a race at which he had a heart attack last year, QCOnline.com reports.

Blakeman, 58, was on Boston Marathon-qualifying pace at the 2013 Quad Cities Marathon when he had a heart attack 19 miles into the race. Blakeman said he doesn't remember the incident, but that witnesses said he looked normal until he suddenly collapsed. He was taken from the race course and spent four days in a hospital, according to QCOnline.com.

At Sunday's race, Blakeman started running at the time and place on the course where he went down last year. Race workers held a banner for him to break as he crossed the finish line. The race gave him a time of 3:25:57, which combines his times for the two segments of the course Blakeman ran last year and this year.

Blakeman's heart attack was caused by a blocked artery. He was cleared to resume running in January, but has been told by doctors not to run marathons, QCOnline.com reports.

hmmmm........

I was so intrigued by this story that I tracked Jeff down and have exchanged a couple of emails. He seems like a great guy, and provided more details. He said he would look into joining our group, but he lives in Kansas City, so maybe he's been preoccupied with the Royals. The paper made one mistake - he's 48, not 58. Thanks Scott for bringing the story to our attention.
Regards, Bruce
