New to forum

Post by BeanCounter on Wed Aug 27, 2014 10:43 am

Greetings! I am new to this forum, but recognize a lot of names from other forums. I have been MIA for a while due to personal stuff that has been going on (don't worry, the important stuff is going well...health, friends, family).

For those that I have not interacted with, here is my background. I am 41 and live in Chicago with my wife of 15 years. I was active growing up and got into endurance sports after watching some friends cross the finish line at the 1999 Chicago marathon. I focused on triathlons from 2001-2005 (5 Ironmans with a PR of 9:56) then shifted my focus to running. Prior to surgery, I had 12 marathons under my belt with a PR of 2:57 in 2008. In November 2008, I was at a routine doctors appointment and my doctor heard a murmur for the first time and referred me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist did the usual tests and told me I had BAV. He further indicated that my condition was fine and I cold keep training, but he wanted me to stop by before every marathon. Well, I had a great training cycle leading up to the 2009 Chicago marathon and had my check up with him a week before. He did not like what he saw on the stress test and told me I could not run the marathon. 7 months later I was on the operating table having my valve replaced with an artificial valve. My surgeon knew my desire to return to running, so he gave me a horse valve.

Since the surgery, I have run 2 marathons (post surgery PR of 3:37), and about 6 half marathons. I have been inconsistent with my training as I have been a bit discouraged that I have not been close to pre-surgery form and I have found that my tolerance to heat/ humidity has really decreased, so training during the summer has been a challenge. It took a few years, but I have finally "gotten over it" and am looking to run the Illinois marathon in April 2015.

Welcome BC!!! So glad you're on this forum - you helped me out so much after I had my surgery, I remember the solid advice you gave on running back then!

I still have a decreased tolerance for heat/humidity.....thankfully we're having a pretty cool summer here in Michigan!

Hi Bean Counter. Your experience sounds similar to mine after surgery.

Welcome BC...I too recall your posts in other forums and it's good to see you here. Hope you'll continue posting sage advice and experiences here.

I am somewhat befuddled about the root cause of my intolerance of heat/humidity. OHS or just age related...probably a combo of both.

Bottom line is I still need to run...and tho I'd love to be the same or better than pre-intervention level...the odds for me are rather long on that outcome. Doesn't mean I can't still have that as a goal..but hopefully I'm a little more rational when the outcome doesn't quite meet the dream.

Thanks for the kind words everybody. I had a nice solid 3 weeks of training as I have been building my base up to 45 MPW, then as soon as I take a step back week, I picked up a chest cold. I believe I am on the back end of it now, so hopefully I can get back out in the next few days.
