Mile Run Series

Post by twal on Wed Aug 13, 2014 8:57 am

Last night was the first of our Valley's Fastest Runner mile run series. (I'm not a contender for that title.) I ran 7:34 and was 12th out of 14. I wish more slower runners would do these races because racing on the track is fun and I like the company. I enjoy the intensity of these races. There is no coasting along.

My pace was even 1:52, 1:55, 1:55, 1:52. My time was a second slower than last year which doesn't sound so bad unless you realize that last year's race was on a terrible dirt track and this year's was on a beautiful all weather track. Old age trumps track conditions.

Next week-a one mile mountain climb.

Albany NY has an all-comers T&F meet for 9 wks every summer. This was the 46th yr and I have been doing them for 32 yrs. I've run the mile about 75 times at these meets. I only got to 4 of them this yr. It concluded last week.

There are several heats of every event, sometimes as many as 4 heats of the mile. In the last, slowest heat it's a stampede with 30 or more on the track and you always see 11-12 minutes. There were people from age 7 to 83. I've seen a 90 yr old run it.

That mile series sounds like fun.

What kind of times did you run this year?

The meets are very well attended because there are distances from 50 meters to 2 mile, plus field events. There are a couple hundred people there most nights and loads of kids. You'll see 3 yr olds run the 50 meters. No entry fee, no sign up. When they call an event, just step on the track.

I did very poorly this year, just under 10 mins., but that never stopped me from trying. Had a long winter/spring where I wasn't able to train much and I put on 10 lbs. The weight is gone now and I'm able to run more consistently, so it's on to longer distances for fall.
