Valversary

Post by Sumorunner on Sat Jul 26, 2014 8:34 pm

23 years ago today, July 26, 1991, got a St Jude's Mechanical aortic valve at Albany Medical Ctr. That's about 1/3 of my life now. We celebrated with wild black raspberry pie and ice cream. Didn't get out to run today because the grandson is staying over for the weekend, but I ran 8 miles yesterday and have been swimming up to 3/4 mile a few days a week. Life is good.

Congrats, Jack, it sure has been a challenge attempting to live up to your wide variety of accomplishments. Are you still running and throwing the shot put in those weekly track meets? I have a javelin that I'd like to get rid of if you are interested.

I've also seen quite a bit of your marvelous art work over the years, and know you spend a lot of time with the grandkids...and now you've added swimming to the mix. Sure don't know how you do it all, but I'm always in awe.

I threw the shot just once this summer. I had been doing my upper body work in winter, up to 200 pushups a day for a few weeks, but then it tailed off due to circumstances I couldn't control. By the time June rolled around I had no upper body strength and just couldn't throw far enough to be bothered. So I put the ball on the shelf. I've never tried the javelin and had to give up on the discus by the time I reached 60. It seemed I threw my back out more than the implement.

My running wasn't going well for most of the year either. Ran almost nothing from Jan. to April. The first 5K I did in April was 36+ and the first mile I tried in June was only 10:11. It's beginning to come along recently though, ran a mile in 9:53 today but still a half minute off a year ago. The 5K is starting to come along too.

And today I went to the pool and swam a mile. I'm a little ahead of the last couple years in that regard, don't usually make it up to a mile until August 5 or 10.
