Seems like starting all over again

Post by Gary E on Sun Apr 21, 2013 9:31 pm

Thanks for the invitation, gang. I hope I can find time to loiter once in awhile. First off, I'm going to try and figure out how to upload an avatar that looks healthier than the one that I finished my CA year with. If I can't find some Hollywood image to fool the newcomers, you might be stuck with an actual photo. Stay tuned, it may take awhile...most of you know how savvy I am with anything more modern than a rotary-dial phone.

Hi Gary, I'm glad you're here. We've been chasing each other on log a run (mostly me trying to catch you) for so long now that you're one of my main motivators and #1 rival...

So who's that handsome guy in your avatar and who uploaded it for you? Laughing

Dave, I'm nursing a tiny muscle strain (I know, you're thinking that all my muscles are tiny) so I'm self-imposing a few days off for it to heal. Of course, the ballclub starts an extended roadtrip tomorrow, so I'll be doing manual labor for an elderly friend over the next few days instead of running. You better get a sizable lead too, because I'll be coming after you by the end of the week!!!

Ask Mike Nall. The photo was taken in his kitchen.

Hi Gary!!!

Okay, so you're going to have to tell ME how to upload an avatar!!! lol!

But I'm not really kidding - I've got to ask someone I work with how to make my files smaller to get them up on this site.....evidently I'm less tech savvy than you....maybe all I can handle is the face-to-face type of technology!

Anyway, great to see you,
Rachel

I haven't run in three weeks. I even went to an orthopedic surgeon and he thought it was a rear meniscus tear, but because I can't have an MRI (pacemaker issues) he could only suggest a cortisone injection to reduce the swelling. I'd rather not use that stuff as it will eventually weaken the tendon, so I'm just laying low and only doing swimming and hiking.

This is the first day off work in eight days, and tomorrow and Sunday I have to work twelve hour shifts as the circus is in town. I swear it seems like I work more now than prior to my retirement. At least it takes my mind off the "not being able to run" syndrome.

Sorry to hear you're still not able to run Gary. I hope it improves soon. You're doing a lot of walking, does that hurt too?... I tore my meniscus (minor tear) several years ago and was unable to run but was also reluctant to have surgery. The thought of not being able to run was a no go too. One of our highly esteemed friends here on the forum (I'll let him own up to it if he wants to) recommended that I work my knee to wear down the sharp edge of the tear. Well, I rode my bike every day for several weeks and it really helped. I still have the tear of course and it can get a little funky if I twist my knee but it handles 30 mile running weeks OK without surgery so I'm happy. All tears are different and Doctors should always be consulted, but the "wear it down" approach seemed to work for me.

Dave, it doesn't seem to bother me at all when walking, occassionally when climbing stairs, and never when swimming. I'm going to try a little biking and if that doesn't flare things up again, I will attempt running on the treadmill (where I can stop and not be miles from the start).
