Trail Race

Post by twal on Sun May 11, 2014 5:07 pm

Ran a tough 5.3 mi trail race today. It was warm (75F), muddy and hilly (some grades were over 20%) so times don't matter much.

This was an age handicapped race so I got to start with some of the old folks and tried to hold off as many as the faster younger racers as possible. There were about 65 runners and 15 awards and I somehow managed to hold on to 15th place.

I ran my guts out. It was one of those efforts where you take two steps past the finish and lie down on the grass and gasp for air for about 5 minutes while people ask "Are you ok, Tom?" Winning a medal made it worthwhile. If I had finished 16th, I would have been crushed.

If they didn't use the age graded handicap starts, I would have only been 27th out of 70.

This was actually my slowest time ever for this course, but it was the hottest it has ever been and my early pace was too fast. I notice my overall pace turned out to be 9:57.

Tom is the fast guy here Bruce. Me, I just wish I was fast (but I do run long)...
