Gazelle Girl Half -Results

Post by Rachel August on Sun Apr 13, 2014 1:49 pm

Hi Everyone!!!!

So…..ran the Gazelle Girl this morning in GR – great event and really great weather (woke up to thunderstorms….but those passed by race time and we got a cloudy 55 degrees – which was perfect)

I did not meet my target time goal this time around but about three days ago I didn’t think I would anyway – I am NOT sad about that – I’d say I’ve got a lot of work to do to run this distance the way I want and by that I mean that I’m not ever going to "race" this distance I’d just like to break 2 hours.

Nate keeps telling me that I look like I have a ton of energy at the end and that’s probably one of my biggest problems…..I don’t know how – or rather I think I lack the courage to “exhaust” myself. He told me that I looked better finishing than a lot of others (and not because he’s my husband…he’s honest he’ll tell me..... and often does tell me when I look like crap)

He also sort of scolded me for not running a “warm-up” run because he knows I like to start slow and my slow mile shouldn’t be during the event – LOL!

So….having said that overall I’m really happy with the event and how I did but I still would change a bunch of things next time (like not taper for so long in the weeks before - yeah weeks..... and start doing planks for example)

Here are my mile splits – there all over the place! I sort of “fell asleep” during mile nine/ten and towards the end I actually told myself to slow down….so there you have it

9:56
9:00 (I was trying – and succeeded in catching the 9:30 pace group from the 10:00 pace group)
9:29
9:29
9:32
9:20
9:20
9:25
9:08 (Don’t know what happened here – but I probably felt good)
9:56 (Noticed people passing me…..)
9:28
9:27
9:58

Forgot to post my time - 2:03:29

Congratulations!!!  From the looks of your splits there is great consistency (except for the first, and that one mystery mile). People usually start out too fast at the start so I wouldn't worry about that one, and at the finish a slower time should have been the fact that the last split was a tenth longer (if it was an accurate course of 13.1 miles). I think you did a fabulous job. There was probably a hill involved in the mystery mile and you didn't even remember it. Now that you have confidence in that distance, I predict a personal best the very next race.

Yay Rachel!!! Nice Race!!

I think your splits were great and they showed you had some room if you do decide you want to race at this distance... Never say never lol!

I agree with Nate and Gary, at the finish you look like you still have a lot left in you.

Fantastic race! Look out Grand Rapids. Have you decided if you are running relay or half?

Great run!!!'

Did you stay with the 9:30 pace group when you caught them?

I agree with your husband, a warm up jog is important before a half marathon to get the capillaries opened in your leg muscles and your heart rate adjusted so that you can start out at your normal pace.

I would say that a 2 hour half is clearly within reach and would encourage you to go for it!!

Thanks everyone for your comments!!!! You all always make me feel so good!

I stayed with the 9:30 pace for a little while - my friend (Virginia) who is also running Boston (for her 5th time) was a pacer - I ran ahead at some point because I felt like it (and mostly because I don't like crowds and her group was becoming a bit crowded)......then during around mile 10 - I not only knew people were passing me, but I could also hear Virginia and so I knew I wasn't too far from her group.

If I could run with her (just me and her) that would be great - but she's a whole lot faster and she doesn't like to run slow (only when she paces races) - in fact all my friends are a whole lot faster than me......

LM - LOVE your avatar....maybe I should start wearing tutu's!!!
