Ocular Problems

Post by Rachel August on Tue Feb 25, 2014 3:19 pm

Anyone know about ocular migraines – is it safe to “run through them” while they are happening?

I’m pretty disappointed….today as I was doing my morning run I experienced an ocular migraine. These start off with a blinding bright spot right in the center of my vision…..so when they start I can’t see anything directly (I have to use my peripheral vision) – then as time goes on the blind spot starts to flash and break-up into a crescent shape. As it grows the blind spot turns into a colorful zig-zag pattern of light in a that quickly pulses and slowly moves out of my field of vision allowing my direct vision to return – it's like I'm watching my own personal and private psychedelic light show - this all takes about 30 minutes.

I’ve had these on and off for about 18 years they are scary but I’ve learned to deal…..however I’ve never experienced these while running so this morning they stopped me in my tracks!

I know they're harmless (several years ago I had an MRI of my brain to rule out any serious neurological conditions and also ruled out retinal detachment) – but does anyone know if it’s safe to “run through” an episode like this?

Same here...although before OHS, they were followed by an intense migraine.  Since OHS, no headaches, just the auras.  I have run through them, basically because it was the only way to get home!i have never had any problems, but let's see why others say!

I like to rest when I get ocular migraines. They are triggered, in my case by caffeine and chocolate. Eliminate the trigger.

I never had these until after my OHS and the first time really scared me. I don't get them very frequently and have never figured what might trigger them. I've had them while running or walking so I just keep on going. Getting while I'm driving I pull over until they pass.

Thanks everyone for your responses!!!! Sorry to hear that you guys also have them! After 18 years - they still manage to scare me!!!

Tom and Kodi - good to know that you run/walk through them without problems that's a REAL comfort to me!!! I've driven while having them and probably shouldn't do that anymore.

Great advice Tom - I think that sometimes my triggers have been my hormones....and believe me I'd like to get rid of those crazy chemicals.....but this time I think it's been stress and lack of sleep.

I tried running this morning - much better - took it slow but had to get back on the horse - can you tell that I really hate these visual disturbances?

I get these once in a while, I call them exertional migraine if they come on while running.  I get the aura but no headache.  I had migraines before my surgery, I still get them but my allergies or exercise seem to trigger them now.  The plus side, if there is one, is that I get the aura and sometimes no headache, sometimes I still get the headache.  My daughter gets headaches too, hers are triggered by hormones, aren't genetics just lovely????

Sorry to hear that you and your daughter also get headaches LM! So far I haven't had the pain - just the freaky light show - hate them anyway!
