My favorite story is from Electropipe. He had cardiac arrest 10 meters from the finish line. After 45 minutes a team revived him. As they lifted him into the ambulance, he asked, "Could you carry me over the finish line?"

Watch out for sticks on your run, it just may be a snake.

Funny, snakes around here do like to warm up in the afternoon sun by sitting in the middle of a trail.

Over the years I've dodged a couple of Rattlers while running on my favorite rail trail. I keep a real sharp eye out because I don't wear my hearing aids when I run and can't hear them... I'm always scared when there's lots of sticks on the trail.

You know you are old when...
1. They start picking up the traffic cones while you are still on the course.
2. You are consistently beat by kids in the 12 and under category.
3. Course volunteers keep asking if you are ok as you (slowly) run by them.
4. You don't wear your favorite race shirts from the 70's and 80's anymore to avoid comments like "Wow! I wasn't even born then!"
5. You are in the "60 to infinity" category, and some races, you feel a lot closer to infinity than to 60.
6. By the time they get to your age group in the awards, most of the younger people have already left.
7. At the halfway point of your race, you start seeing people running back the other direction doing their cooldowns.
8. The race did not order enough awards and they run out by the time they get to the 60+ category (yes, this has happened to me) leaving you with a vague promise to mail your awards to you (which does not always happen)
9. The people in their 40's start looking like teenagers to you.
10. When you were younger, your goal was to be in the top 10 overall, then the top 10% overall. Now, it is to be in the top 50%, and you often can not make it.
and now ... I think I will take a nap

Here is a real life story to add to this one. I'm running a track 10K race with almost exclusively college runners. A few laps in I'm running at the back and a college aged girl standing in the infield notices me as I pass her and yells out "Oh my God! Look how old that guy is!"

That was a great learning opportunity for the young ones! Maybe someday after enough years pass and if they stick with it and if they are very lucky then maybe they can run as fast as you do when they reach your age... Just saying...
