Any help for friend?

Post by twal on Fri Feb 21, 2014 7:50 pm

A close friend of mine who was a national caliber runner back in the 1950's has been having some trouble with his heart. He's had aortic and mitral valve work done and at a recent cathederization was told

"It turns out that the right side of my heart,  the side that pumps blood to the lungs is not doing what it should.  Probably only supplying 50% of the blood to the lungs that it should.  Making the lungs incapable of suppling me with energy.  And by not getting enough blood and oxygen, the lungs are being made to waste away.  And there is no way to fix the heart nor to make the lungs better."

Even though he is tring to stay active, this sounds like a bad situation. Does anybody have any suggestions or advice?

That's a tough situation Tom, I'm sorry for your friend. I'm sure he is aggressively looking for help... If I was given that cath. report I would be headed to the Cleveland Clinic ASAP for their opinion. I hope he finds something/someone that helps.

I agree with Dave. That is what tertiary care is all about. Cleveland Clinic would be a great choice. Or the Sports Cardiology program at Mayo.

I would also recommend a second opinion. While I don't believe it has been formally announced, Cleveland Clinic is currently in the process of setting up a sports cardiology dept. for what they call the cardio-athlete. If it is an option for you under your particular insurance plan we can put you in touch with someone there.
