Re: Welcome Viking

Thanks for welcoming me. I am a 65 y/o Swedish-American living in Duluth, Minnesota. I underwent quadruple bypass surgery November 27, 2012. I was also diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at that time, so I am dealing with two chronic diseases. I was a racing cyclist 40+ years ago and transitioned to competitive running and x-country after returning to Minnesota in 1972. I competed off and on until 1992 when I had an almost fatal heart attack while playing hockey.

For the next 20 years I kept reasonably fit through hiking and snowshoeing year-round - running had caused too many injuries and x-country skiing is very weather sensitive - I needed something I could do consistently. I did some mountain biking too, but my job as the CEO of a large non-profit consumed me. I gained weight and stress, suffered through some horrible personal tragedies, and ended up needing bypass.

After the Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, I changed my diet immediately and added serious cycling to my hiking. I currently have 3 dogs (down from a pack of 6!) who still motivate me to get them out on the trails year-round. I lost 50 pounds and am now back at my competitive weight from the late 60's. My diabetes is under perfect control with diet, exercise, and oral medication (metformin.)

Exercise is critically important for Type 2 diabetics. It lowers insulin resistance, which is the main culprit in Type 2. Unfortunately, it only has that effect for 24 to 48 hours, so consistency is the key. I consider my diabetes to be my number one risk factor for my heart disease. I'm still working full time at a demanding job, but have negotiated for a slightly reduced work schedule in order to keep my fitness levels improving. Obviously, I am contemplating retirement but have not set a date.

Thanks again!

Welcome Viking!!!!

Sounds like you’ve been through it alright! So glad to hear that you were able to do the necessary changes to get your diabetes under control! My grandmother was a diabetic and I’ve got several obese relatives….sort of made an impression on me when I was growing up to live a little differently - so I tried very hard to live a healthy lifestyle….and still wound up with a defective heart….go figure – some things just can’t be prevented.

But – we do what we can!!! Keep up the great work with your hiking and on the bike! My friends and I are super tired of this winter (I live in Michigan) – we often say to each other that people in MN are tougher than we are….so just know that people like you keep us wimps here in Michigan motivated!

Glad you found us – lots of great people here on this site!!!
