How To Start Up A Heart Support Group

Post by phillyheart on Wed Feb 19, 2014 2:39 pm

I have been trying in the Philadelphia area for one year to find a heart disease support group. (I understand that my needs are different from someone who had open heart surgery with the heart stopped--those folks may have specific, and critical cognitive/memory issues to deal with, and need a higher level of support.)

However, in trying to reverse heart disease with diet, meds and exercise, it would really help to have a supportive "in-person" group to exchange ideas with at a monthly meeting.

I have not been able to find a group in my area, even with the AHA trying to help.  My guess is that Doctors guard their heart groups and are careful not to publicize them, and let in outsiders who are not patients in their practice. Am I wrong?

Is anyone here in a local heart support group? How did you find or start the group? Does a doctor or nurse, etc., need to be the moderator? Are there any legal
issues I am not aware of--do members sign a release not to hold anything against anyone in the group?

Can I just place an ad for a group, or maybe post a flyer in libraries, senior centers, etc? I don't want to jump into something with unknown pitfalls, and get sued by somebody, as I am not a doctor or medical professional. But I sure would like to participate in a heart group.

I tried for years and gave up, but then Albany is much smaller than Philly. I have found a few individuals and we've met from time to time but they all have separate goals and aspirations, so none are really interested in a support group.

When I discovered a new local prospect, I'd try to meet them for a coffee or lunch and have a good long talk about it. The newbies are always full of doubts and fears. I merely try to ease those a bit, then we go our separate ways.
