Rocket City Marathon - Huntsville Alabama, Sat Dec 14

Post by DonSoule on Thu Dec 12, 2013 9:17 am

I've been training well for the Rockt City Marathon and felt I could run a good marathon - the only negatives on the course were the 100+ turns on the course (I'll try an run the tangents) and the prediction for a cold rain. Then last night I couldn't sleep at all and woke up feeling progressivly sicker so it's not looking good - hope I can survive the flight!

Top 10 signs today's NOT the day you're going to run your Marathon PR !!

1.  You've been sick for the past 52 hrs before the gun goes off and you're really not 100% better yet.
2.  You start your slow down at mile 1.
3.  At mile 4 the stomach cramps start.
4.  You started with 7 gels and end with 7 gels cause you can't get them down (you ate 1 and got a free one)
5.  By mile 10 you can't even handle the water at the aid stations without feeling sicker.
6.  With 11 miles to go you spend all your mental energy trying to calculate what walking pace you need to come in under the 6 Hr Cut Off.
7.  With 7 miles to go you realize your calculation was wrong - that 5 minute buffer is gone,
8.  The second to the last aid station is almost completely packed up when you get there.
9.  With 3 miles to go you start hearing Santa is coming and then you realize that Santa is running with the sweeper runners and that the volunteers are excited to see him because that means they can go home.
10. The only PR you have a shot at setting is the most port-a-potty stops in a Marathon.
Well you have that one covered - A PR's a PR!! Smile

On a positive note:

1.  The volunteers were all positive - at least they thought you could do it!
2.  You got to walk and talk with some friendly runners sharing the experience until they decided to run!
3.  You actually ran the last mile for the finisher photo - you just hope the photographer didn't finish early!
4,  At least you finished ahead of Santa!!
5.  The Clock read 5:56:00 when you crossed it!
6.  The chip time was 5:55:24!
7.  It isn't even your PW!
8.  Then there's that one PR you set!!
9.  You earned the finisher medal and cap!!
10. There's always another one and you're already registered for the next 3!
11. Hey, I wasn't even in last place!! Smile

Don,

I'm so sorry to hear about your marathon - on the other hand - you've got a great attitude and an awesome sense of humor!!!

Since I've never even attempted a marathon (nor have I come close to attempting) I'm in awe of you and everyone else who run this far!!!!

I enjoy following your races - when's your next one?

Thanks Kevin and Rachael!

Rachael my next Marathon will be the Goofy Challenge at Disney World in January where you run the Half Marathon on Saturday morning and the Full Marathon on Sunday morning. I won't be going for a PR in that one it will be more for fun with a couple of other guys from MN. Meredith will be mostly shoping for her Mickey Collection and cheering for us. The other two guys doing this have not been training much at all so I'll run an easy half with them stopping for pictures along the way with all the Disney Characters and then try and run the full with one of my favorite pacers from the Cliff Pace Team. She will be leading the 5 Hr goal group in the Marathon. I've run a few marathons in MN with this particular pacer and she is really good at keeping the group running with her on pace, entertained and distracted with her stories.

You made it which is better than I would have done under the circumstances.

That's a probelm with destination marathons. You have too much sunk cost so just say "I'll skip this one and do one next week."

Well Don. Welcome to the club! I walked the last 8 miles of that race when I did it.
It is great that you gave it a shot and found the limits of your ability for the day. I am really looking forward to seeing what you can do now without the illness.
What is your next race that you plan to run for a PR?

My next try for a good time will be in May at the Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon - it's a flat as a pancake marathon on a paved bike trail with one turn. Small with a 450 runner limit but a relatively large BQ percentage. I've run it 3 times - first time was a PR and the second two I ran injured so not great times. Then if that one doesn't work, I'm signed up for Grandma's too.

Don, tough luck, but you will enjoy the a Goofy! I have done two...the inaugural and the 5th...if you have to make room reservations, Port Orleans is right across from the start so you don't have to get up at 3:30 to catch a bus. Keep an eye on the weather forecast...I have done WDW 6 times and it was 25 and it was 65, at the start at 5:45 am! They have increased the cap on runners from 15,000 per race to 25,000 so the course (and expo) are VERY crowded....so just enjoy it. My secret is chocolate milk, at least a quart, after the half on Saturday as soon as you finish....it helps recovery.

Thanks for the tip Tom -  Hope they have some chocolate milk at the finish - not sure where I'll find it if they don't provide it?? We're staying at the Coronado Springs Resort so I'm guessing I'll be getting up early for the Bus - that's probably the biggest negative to doing the Goofy or the Dopey having to get up early on consecutive mornings.   I don't have any real time goals so might just get to the half a little late and go out with the last corral.  For the Marathon I plan to run with the 5Hr pacing group which should be an easy pace for me.  Just doing the Goofy for fun and just to do it.  Very Happy

Good luck Don...they did have some chocolate milk after the finish last year....for sale! My wife picked up some so when we met up, I drank it. The lines for the buses back to the hotels are long, so get in line soon after finishing, especially Saturday! And, on Sunday afternoon, it is expected that you wear ALL THREE medals around the parks!

Thanks Tom - I'll be sure and wear all 3 medals!!  Of course this year there will be a lot of runners with their 6 Dopey medals Smile

Have you or anyone done the Pasta Party in the Park - are there any extra perks for your $50+ plate of spagehtti other than the fireworks show which is free anyway??

I have never done the pasta party...there are lots of good eats in the parks. My two favorite are Mama Melrose in Disney Studios and Via Napoli in Epcot (in the Italy pavilion). Check on line for reservations...they get full fast on marathon weekend...and eating at an early time is fine, seeing as you are running at 5:45 am!
