Good stuff Dave...thanks for posting.

I'm with Venkat on the statin thing and it's disheartening to see the large perctenage of the population that 'should' be taking them.

The 'should' keeps increasing. It used to be that about 30% of people over 50 were taking them, but then the drug companies figured they weren't making enough money. What they did then was get their reps elected or selected to key committees in the AMA and changed the criteria for statins. (They've done it for other drugs and procedures as well, but sticking to the subject...) Subsequently about 70% of 50 yr olds were told to take them. They get their way because any doctor that does not follow the AMA guidelines or 'recommendations' could be subject to malpractice lawsuits. Now, they have this burning need to make more money, so are attempting to change the criteria again to a wider population, cradle to grave if they can.

It begins with 'funded' research that makes the case, then the lobbying of the AMA follows. When your read or hear news about new medical research 'has concluded X', be very skeptical about who paid for that research and why.

Oh, I watched the mechanism in action. It works this way in all sorts of industries. I worked for a corp. R&D center for 25 yrs and they always pushed for our engineers and scientists to get deeply involved in professional societies. They also funded a lot of University research when the conclusion was in some way predetermined and would yank the funds if there was a chance it might not go their way. Whenever industry guidelines were being set by a national or global organization, they had to know who was "their man" in the committee. Sometimes those committees served as battlegrounds with other companies, sometimes they offered a safe means of collusion.
