Suggestions For 2014 Gathering

Post by Dave Tuttle on Mon Oct 21, 2013 5:21 pm

Does anyone want to suggest a location for our 2014 gathering?

Does anyone want to volunteer to help with the 2014 gathering?

Tom and I, and maybe some others, have experience with overnight 200 mile, 12 person relays. The van rental, registration, hotels, gas brings the cost to around $250 per person. This does NOT include getting to the event. It may be something to consider. It is very much a team building experience and would be a way for us to hand out information on the organization to all of the runners that we see at the exchanges. I would be willing to serve as a driver and van captain for one of the two vans. We would need someone to be the overall captain and a second van captain.

Oh.. BTW. Here are the photos of what I was doing while you guys were having a blast in Syracuse. It is our third year of running the Bourbon Chase.

Also, Ragnar is now offering that if you only have 6 runners, they will hook you up with other single vans to make a team....that way we only need 6 runners....and to be honest, you hardly see the other van anyways...you really bond with everyone in your van!

They also have some trail ones where you don't even need a van. Seems you set up a camp type area and each runner runs a loop then hangs with the rest of the team until it's his/her turn again. I never did a trail one but did three of the two van ones. Lots of fun, especially with the right teammates.

Grand Rapids Marathon, Half Marathon, and Team Relay.

Post by Dave Tuttle on Tue Oct 22, 2013 3:44 pm

This is a race that was suggested to me while we were in Syracuse. It has a Marathon, Half Marathon, and a Team Relay.

http://grandrapidsmarathon.com/

There is something here for everyone. It looks like a good race for spectators too and we have an offer of help putting it together... All pluses IMO.

Richmond Marathon, Half Marathon, and 8K

Post by Dave Tuttle on Tue Oct 22, 2013 3:45 pm

Here is another race worth considering that was suggested in Syracuse. It is a family and spectator friendly race that offers an event for all runners.

http://www.richmondmarathon.com/

We have an offer of help with the organizational work for this one too.

Richmond had 18,700 this year. We might run into the same crowd problems as Baltimore. Grand Rapids had 3900, roughly double what we saw in Syracuse which was smallish as marathons go.

It hasn't happened to us yet, but always check for whatever race we suggest filling up. If there's a size limit, they sometimes close out registration months in advance. Grand Rapids did not fill up this year.

BTW, I met someone at Syracuse who ran in Baltimore this year. It got even bigger, 28,000, but they spread out the finish area so crowding was merely unreasonable rather than outrageous or unsafe.

I have a conflict with any race that is the 3rd weekend in October so I'm hoping you don't pick the Grand Rapids one because that appears to be the same weekend as Syracuse was - The one at Richmond looks good to me but I couldn't tell if they have the relay options which everyone seems to enjoy.   I think doing the Grand Rapids one would also mean Gary and Linda couldn't make it either due to their commitment to the Columbus Marathon which I'm guessing is that same weekend.

How about this cool link?  Marathons into 2014, keep selecting next two months at the bottom....you can sort on state by clicking on the header.

Marathon Guide.com

A lot of the dates are blank but it gives a good idea of the variety we are looking for.  Just throwing ideas out there for individuals looking for a new one in March, there's one in Vegas:

Red Rock Canyon

Another good link:  2013-2014 Half Marathons

The Richmond does not have a relay. It does have a 8k, Half and full marathon.
Since there is not a relay the larger size should not have a major impact.

Grand Rapids seems like a fine choice. I know that Rachel speaks very high about it.

I do think that GR has a nice race event (event size - nice course)….but my biggest concerns are that it will fall on a time when some people won’t be able to make it (I think it’s always/usually on the 3rd week of October)

I also have a concern that GR might be too far for most people and that (although I like living here) it might not be a destination city for everyone.

I’ll personally go anywhere – Richmond looks great too….and I’m more than willing to help out on the next one regardless of location.

Since all of these are far from AZ, I have to travel no matter where. Personally I like the smaller races the major reason I avoid anything that has Rock n Roll associated with it, no desire to ever do NYC.

Cowtown:

Ultra

Marathon

Half

10K

5K

There is something for everyone.

Russ, we were having some discussions in Syracuse, "How can we get Russ to cross the pond and join us at next year's event?"

Ah, that's nice to know!

Would love to get across, keep me posted on the voting choices and general timings and I'll see what I can do. Second half of next year is a possibility, race diary-wise, but like I say keep me in the loop.

Willmington, NC has a marathon, half, relay, 5K in March.
I promise you won't need to wear your winter parkas. Smile

I know we've typically done the Relay in the fall, but this might be nice

I can arrange hotel/dining if interested.

If we decide to do Wilmington, I would be glad to help with contacts there....my daughter an her family live there and have run the half. It is a really flat course, and a beautiful city....staying at the beach for the race is definitely an option.

Trish,
The Wrightsville beach run looks nice to me. The only problem that I can envision is the date. There was talk in Syracuse of meeting at in Cincinnati for the American Heart Association run. Wrightsville and Cincinnati are on the same date-March 16th 2014.
