I am inclined to think there is too much of a good thing but there is definitely more to know and understand. Most troubling to me is evidence of fibrosis and scar tissue formation in life-long endurance athletes. Unlike post-race elevation in cardiac enzymes, fibrosis and scar tissue can't be dismissed as short-term conditions that might or might not have clinical significance. As the debates and research continue, I will be interested to see how the science sorts out cause vs. correlation, and what constitutes "intense*" exercise, and how different individuals respond to different "doses" of exercise. Like anything else, I would expect that some individuals are much more tolerant of sustained cardiac exercise than others. Meanwhile, while I'm curious about how it all sorts out, I'm not planning to change any of my habits in the foreseeable future -- but I reserve the right to reconsider.

* I travel at a snail's pace at a heart rate that is 90% of my theoretical max -- is that "intense?"

I'll let you know how it all pans out when I reach 100.

Thanks for posting this Mike. This is something that everyone here should read and digest.

I wonder where the researchers could find a group of folks with known heart disease willing to exercise way beyond the normal recommended level? study

I am sure that no such group exists.

Not me, not if they want to run us for hours and hours every day like the rats they killed in their study...

I'm with Sumo but my short term goal is to run through my 70s and then re evaluate sunny

This IS something to keep a close eye on.

Agreed ..the scar tissue and fibrosis are concerns. Personally...I got a ton of external scarring....mostly due to running as it turns out...(long semi-tragic story) and of course my latest batch (Thanx Doc!) I guess some internal ones will just balance it out.

As my dearly beloved Mum used to say...Screw the Golden Years
